Rupture and Repair: DEI Accountability Measures in Practice | Tonya Bailey-Curry, LCSW

This 30-minute virtual session on taking accountability for harm related to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) in healthcare settings will focus on explaining the concepts, sharing best practices for accountability, and providing actionable steps for individuals and organizations. Participants will be able to:

Understand the role of accountability in DEIA
Identify different forms of harm in DEIA contexts
Distinguish between intent and impact in harmful situations
Create action plans for implementing accountability practices

Tonya Bailey-Curry is a licensed clinical social worker and a DEIA practitioner. She is the Associate Dean of Students and Director of the Student Center for Belonging and Community at Bates College. In her role, Tonya is responsible for creating a vision and strategic plan to design, implement, and assess a set of robust, cohesive, and integrated programs that foster the academic, cocurricular, personal, and postgraduate success of students from historically underrepresented identities including students of color, LGBTQ+ students, and first-generation to college students. Tonya also serves at the DEI specialist for the MERGE Executive Council, which oversees the fiduciary and strategic vision for the MERGE Collaborative.

This 30-minute virtual session will overview strategies and techniques for preceptors to be more effective. Participants will be able to:

Understand the principles of Adult Learning Theory
Implement the “One Minute Preceptor” tool to help with effective teaching in a clinical setting
Implement the “BID” tool for teaching procedures/physical exam skills in a clinical setting

Dr. Kimball is the Course Director for the Competency-Based Apprenticeship in Primary Care (Tufts/Maine Track). He received his medical training from Tufts University School of Medicine and completed his internship, residency and chief residency in Family Medicine at Maine Medical Center. He also completed his fellowship in Addiction Medicine at Maine Medical Center and USVA-Togus. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine and practices both Family Medicine and Addiction Medicine at MaineHealth Primary Care Family Medicine Westbrook.

Supporting Healthcare Learners with Disabilities | Bethany Picker, MD

This 30-minute virtual session will overview strategies and techniques to support learners with disabilities in a healthcare setting. Participants will be able to:

Define disability in a health education setting
Value learners with disability within a DEI framework
Recognize the risks of un/mismanaged disability
Appreciate the role of the preceptor in supporting learners with disabilities

Dr. Picker has been faculty in graduate medical education since 2022 and has been at CMMC since 2006. She became the Program Director in 2018. She has led the program to participate in national innovation studies of FM education including the Length of Training study and the Clinic First Collaborative. Recently, she has been focusing on collaborating with local partners to increase the program’s work in the community.

Wellness & Mindfulness to Increase Retention & Reduce Burnout | Kelley Strout, PhD, RN

This 30-minute virtual session will overview WellNurse, an interprofessional, holistic wellness intervention designed to promote resilience and reduce burnout. Participants will be able to:

Understand the impact of emotional well-being and stress on nursing student’s retention and on-time graduation.
Define mindfulness.
Explore evidence-based intervention options for nurses and healthcare professionals and their use in student populations.

Kelley Strout is an Associate Professor and Director of the School of Nursing at UMaine. She is the Principal Scientific Investigator for two federal Health Resources Services Administration grants focused on diversifying the nursing workforce, transforming nursing education, and promoting resilience. In the past three years, she has secured over $5 million in federal funding. Under her leadership, UMaine Nursing ranked in the top 11% of BSN programs nationwide by U.S. News and World Report. She lives in Bangor with her husband and two sons.

Navigating Difficult Feedback Conversations with Learners | Thomas Gearan, MD

This 30-minute virtual session will review strategies for approaching difficult feedback conversations with learners in the clinical learning environment. Participants will be able to:

Identify common causes of conflict in the educational setting.
Develop a framework for how to approach (and not approach) conflict and difficult feedback conversations.

Thomas Gearan, MD, FACP is currently the Associate DIO at Maine Medical Center (MMC) and MMC Site Director for the MERGE Collaborative. He previously served as program director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program and Rural Internal Medicine Maine (RIMM) Track, and currently serves as Chair of the ACGME Medically Underserved Areas and Populations Advisory Board. He received his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine and completed his internship, residency, and chief residency in internal medicine at Boston Medical Center. He is Associate Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine and practices general internal medicine at MMC.

Recognizing & Supporting Neurodivergent Traits in Medical Learners | Rebecca Stetzer, MD

This 30-minute virtual session will cover how to approach struggling learners with a neurodiversity lens with the goal of optimizing support efforts. Participants will be able to:

Identify ways in which neurodivergent traits may present in the clinical learning environment.
Recognize the strengths and challenges encountered by medical learners with neurodivergent traits.
Consider ways to adapt teaching approaches and environments to support neurodivergent learners, even if not disclosed.

Rebecca Stetzer, MD, AGSF is an Associate Professor of Family Medicine, Internal Medicine and Neurology, and a fellowship-trained geriatrician with a special interest in cognitive impairment. She earned her medical degree from Emory University, completed residency at the Atlanta Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program, and geriatric fellowship at Tufts/Baystate Medical Center. Clinically, she works at the Center of Excellence for Alzheimer's Disease (CEAD) Albany Medical Center, where she provides care to older adults with cognitive impairment together with an inter- and multi-disciplinary team while hosting a variety of learners. In medical education she serves as assistant dean for competency-based assessment for which she supports struggling learners.

Integrating Addiction Care into Healthcare Provider Education | Eva Quirion, MP, PhD

This 30-minute virtual session will address the need for addiction awareness and give strategies to frame addiction awareness in the clinical education setting. Participants will be able to:

State at least one reason why it is important for new health care providers to understand and treat addiction.
Recognize and correct stigmatizing language and attitudes related to people who use drugs and alcohol.
Identify and address at least one barrier to the integration of addiction care into the education of health providers.

Dr. Eva Quirion, NP, PhD is a graduate of The University of Maine, Orono and the University of Phoenix. Eva’s clinical practice includes working side by side with primary care providers in order to help people living with chronic pain by providing sustainable, evidence-based care. She has become an expert at tapering chronic controlled substances with compassion due to the necessity to move away from high risk prescribing and move toward helping patients achieve meaningful functional improvements.

Structural Competency & Migrant Farmworker Health | Cheryl K. Seymour, MD

This 30-minute virtual session will introduce the concept of structural competency in medical education through the example of migrant and seasonal farmworker (MSFW) health. Participants will:

Expand their clinical thinking to include structural causes of illness.
Define and apply structural competency as a framework using a shared vocabulary.
Explore the concepts of structural violence and structural interventions through examples from MSFW healthcare.

Cheryl K. Seymour, MD has worked for the past twenty years caring for migrant and seasonal farmworkers with the Maine Mobile Health Program - serving as medical director for ten. Cheryl is an enthusiastic advocate for structurally competent and anti-racist medical care. Community health workers and farmworker patients across Maine are her favorite teachers; she strives to share their lessons with students, physicians and policy makers in order to inform a radical re-imagination of physician training and health care delivery.

Time Efficient Teaching | Jason Hine, MD

This 30-minute virtual session will cover the educationally enriching roles learners can play to support clinical operations and share presentation techniques in the clinical teaching setting. Learning objectives for this session include:

Identify and list specific teaching techniques that may improve the efficiency of teaching in the clinical setting.
Create a plan for improving teaching efficiency that includes at least two specific teaching techniques.

Jason F. Hine, MD completed his medical education as part of the Tufts Maine Track inaugural class. He went on to complete his Emergency Medicine residency at Temple University Hospital in North Philadelphia where he also served as chief resident. He joined Southern Maine Health Care (SMHC) in August 2016 and serves as the Educational Administrator there. Through the Scholars Program he hopes to improve his and his colleagues bedside teaching of residents and students at the SMHC ED.

Dr. Annie Derthick is a clinical psychologist and the Director of Behavioral Science at the Central Maine Medical Center Family Medicine Residency. She also serves as the Associate Program Director. In that capacity, Dr. Derthick oversees the process of resident evaluation. She is also involved in faculty development, resident remediation, curriculum development, and program evaluation. Dr. Derthick serves as the Chair to the MERGE Executive Council, which oversees the fiduciary and strategic vision for the MERGE Collaborative.
